Employment for Individuals with Disabilities

The federal government has a special employment program for individuals with disabilities, also known as the Schedule A hiring authority. It gives federal agencies an optional, and potentially quicker, way to hire individuals with intellectual, severe physical, or psychiatric disabilities.

How to Apply

Create an account on www.usajobs.gov, and within your Profile select the Hiring Path "I am an individual with a disability."  Build your two-page resume and make your resume searchable. If your resume is searchable, hiring managers can then find you and potentially hire you under Schedule A. Be prepared to provide required documentation upon request.

AND

You may also apply to our current vacancies opened to Individuals with disabilities posted at USAJobs.gov. To apply, applicants must submit a complete application package for each vacancy.

Required Documentation

To prove your eligibility to be appointed to a federal job under Schedule A, provide "proof of a disability" documentation as part of your application package. "Proof of a disability" is a letter stating that you have an intellectual disability, severe physical disability or psychiatric disability. You can request this documentation from your doctor, a licensed medical or rehabilitation professional, or any federal, state, District of Columbia, or US territory agency that issues or provides disability benefits.

The proof of disability documentation needs to specify that you are eligible to apply using Schedule A. It does NOT need to detail your specific disability, medical history or need for accommodation. View a sample Schedule A proof of disability letter.
