Payments From the Government

Federal government payments include mandatory benefits like Social Security and Medicare, tax refunds, and pandemic-related aid (Economic Impact Payments, unemployment, Child Tax Credit), transitioning to electronic methods like Direct Express and Go Direct, managed by agencies like the Treasury and IRS for various funds, loans, and grants for individuals and organizations.

Types of Federal Payments

  • Mandatory Spending (Direct Payments): Funds entitlement programs mandated by law, such as Social Security (retirement, disability, survivor benefits) and Medicare (hospital, home health, etc.). 
  • COVID-19 Relief: Economic Impact Payments (stimulus checks) and enhanced Unemployment Compensation. 
  • Tax Credits: Payments related to programs like the Child Tax Credit. 
  • Tax Refunds: Money returned to individuals by the IRS. 
  • Grants & Loans: Federal funds for states, organizations (grants), education, or small businesses (loans). 
  • Other: Wages, salaries, benefits, and reimbursements. 

How You Receive Payments 

  • Electronic Payments: The government is moving away from paper checks to electronic transfers for most payments (Social Security, tax refunds). 
  • Direct Deposit: Payments sent directly to your bank account. 
  • Direct Express: A prepaid debit card for federal benefits. 
  • Go Direct: Electronic Federal Benefit Payments.
