Payments To the Government

Annually, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS) processes more the 500 million transactions, collecting more than $4 trillion in revenue through a suite of modern and reliable payment systems and solutions. For individuals and businesses, these systems make it easy, safe, and secure to pay money owed. For agencies governmentwide, these systems can be implemented to expand and modernize existing payment and collection methods.

Digital Ways to Pay

Payments to the federal government primarily come in the form of taxes via platforms like IRS Direct Pay and EFTPS; but individuals and businesses also make non-tax payments for fees, licenses, and other services via platforms like Pay.gov. BFS offers the same convenient digital payment solutions the public uses every day -- including digital wallets, debit and credit cards, mobile apps, and online bill payers -- all tailored to meet federal requirements for financial integrity while, at the same time, making payments easy for the public to make.

Modernizing Federal Payments

The federal government is moving away from paper checks. Executive Order 14247, “Modernizing Payments to and From America’s Bank Account,” urges agencies to accelerate their work to make payments faster, safer, and easier by using electronic options instead of mailed checks.
